When Your Olive Branch Gets Bent out of Shape

When Your Olive Branch Gets Bent out of Shape

Extending the olive branch is a phrase you have heard referenced before. It is an ancient symbol meaning “let us make peace.” The symbol finds its origins in the book of Genesis following the record of the Flood during the time period of Noah.

When interpersonal conflict threatens even the best relationships, someone needs to extend the olive branch to set the process of reconciliation in motion.
Being passive aggressive is tempting and even enjoyable in a morbid sort of way. When another person has wielded hurt, ignoring their texts and phone calls feels empowering. When you disagree with the choices a friend is making, it is easy to conveniently not ask them to do things with you anymore. When you have verbally harmed the perso you love with reckless words, it is tempting to pretend like the harm inflicted by your words will just miraculously evaporate.

Why not extend the olive branch? What is to keep you from being the initiator of reconciliation? Call the person you have not communicated with due to conflict. Send a friendly text. Buy a small gift as a token of your goodwill. There are limitless possibilities.

But, keep this thought in mind… You are an imperfect human being. Surprise, right? Even your kindest gestures are not flawless. You may find that you must extend more than one olive branch, as you strive to do your part in resolving a disagreement!

And, one last thought: you may find that your olive branch gets bent out of shape on occasion. You are trying your best to be a peacemaker, but you hit a wall! Reconciliation is often hard work. It takes time to rebuild trust. When your olive branch gets bent out of shape, do not give up. Do not despair. Allow yourself some breathing room. Tomorrow is a new day. Pick up a fresh olive branch and extend it one more time!
