Letters to My Grandson: Welcome to this World
My Dear Grandson,
You came into this world late last night. You were a few days early, so what a surprise! It is July 12th, 2021. I am marveling over your newborn pictures. I cannot wait to hold you for the first time.
Your birth brings back vivid memories of your father’s entrance into this world on May 22nd, 1992. Your grandma went into labor during the middle of the night, so we had a friend come over to watch Uncle Randall. He was a few months shy of his 3rd birthday at the time.
When the delivery was completed, it was time for shift change at the hospital. The nurse going off duty got into an argument with the nurse going on duty as to whose responsibility it was to take care of your dad. My blood began to boil, and I came within a millisecond of telling both nurses exactly what I thought. And then I looked at your dad, my heart melted. I calmed down. As you will discover, your dad always brings a calming presence wherever he happens to be at the time.
It was a difficult chapter in our lives when we received the news that your grandma was expecting your dad. My mother was dealing with Stage IV colon cancer. Her death was imminent. I was able to tell her that she had another grandchild on the way.
The birth of your dad brought healing during a season of grief. He continues to be a healer. His calm and kind demeanor are a gift. His quiet and gentle presence is valued. You too will come to appreciate his peaceful demeanor.
You are fortunate, my dear grandson. You have two wonderful parents. I know they are treasuring the opportunity to hold you today. I will join them soon. Mischief awaits us.
